There Are Dues Being Paid In Hollywood To Another Union — The Democrat Party
With the Janus Supreme Court decision raining down hard on public employee union contributions, a previously reliable source of revenue for the Democrats, it occurred to me there’s a hidden union that collects “dues” from members in Hollywood — the Democrat Party.
JJ Abrams, Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Stacey Snider and too many others to list routinely dial for dollars and send letters, invitations to fundraisers where it is suggested you open your checkbook to the Democrat Party.
Refusing to do so could mean the difference between keeping a project in what’s known as contention. In other words, pay the Democrats to increase the likelihood of a greenlight from the honchos who have the power to make or kill a project.
As a side effect, these Democrat mega donors listed can enjoy more prestige and access as they’re able to demonstrate the ability to bring in more money. So, a TV producer paying Spielberg is elevating Spielberg’ power, in addition to funding a political ideology.
I’ve witnessed some in Hollywood happily write those checks and some, though progressive, wince at the idea of seeing someone like Katzenberg on their phone sheet looking for that heavy $5K/$10K/$20K check.
I don’t have a fleshed out answer on how to solve this.
Perhaps outlawing political fundraising from people with a certain level of power within Hollywood? Perhaps outlawing having your political fundraising operation and staff reside in the same office as your studio? Force these big shots to register as lobbyists?
I don’t know.
It’s strange to watch the same progressive crowd decry the influence of money in politics while they’ve rapidly built their own machine and enforce its use quite abrasively.
